Car Smells And What The Issues Could Be

One of the most common issues drivers face is an unusual smell. There are a number of different smells linked to car problems. Learning to identify the smells coming from your car makes it easier to know what's wrong and how to fix it. Some smells, although unpleasant, may be able to be resolved quickly and easily. Others, such as problems with the brakes, the car's fluids, or a major component like the engine will need a mechanic's attention.

Here, we offer some common car smells that will help you determine what kind of problem you may be facing.

Burned Rubber

The odor of burning rubber is common. This smell can be due to several different problems. The burning rubber smell may sometimes derive from an oil leak. When oil drips out below the engine, it can land on the exhaust pipe, which in turn creates a foul burning smell. The smell can also stem from a problem with the brakes. The most frequent cause is the brake pads that wear out and cause friction.

Gym Clothes

This unpleasant smell usually comes from your cabin. It might be more noticeable when you turn on the air conditioning unit after a long time, such as the change in seasons. The air conditioning system naturally has a dark and damp environment. If clean air doesn't get pushed through the system, which can happen if you don't run the a/c for some time, mildew and mold can start to grow and cause a pungent odor of old clothes.

Burned Carpet

This smell usually signals trouble with the brakes. The brake pads begin smelling similar to burning carpet when they break down and wear out. If you notice this smell, be sure to bring your car into a mechanic to get the brake pads replaced before extensive damage results. The smell may start after braking hard while you're driving, especially when descending a steep hill or driving in stop-and-go traffic. The smell can also be due to driving with the hand brake up.

Syrup

The smell of syrup generally points to an issue with the coolant fluid. Leaking coolant fluid is a serious problem that should be checked by a mechanic. The leak can come from several places, including the radiator or cylinder head. A mechanic can find the problem and fix the broken part if necessary.

Sulfer Or Rotten Eggs

This smell might mean that the catalytic converter doesn't correctly process hydrogen sulfide and other gases in your car's exhaust system, which then causes a bad smell. The rotten egg odor can also signal a problem with the engine.
