Why Is My Car Overheating?

An overheating engine can leave you without a car to drive, and it can also cost you quite a bit for repairs. Engines may get too hot and overheat for a variety of reasons. Some problems are easier to fix than others, especially if the problem is corrected early on before it leads to major issues. If you are out driving and your car suddenly starts to overheat, be sure to schedule an appointment with a mechanic to have the vehicle evaluated right away.

Coolant Fluid Concentration

One problem that you might encounter is an issue with the coolant fluid itself. Vehicles need to have the proper amount of coolant fluid to work correctly, and they also need the right kind of coolant fluid. A skilled mechanic can always ensure that your car has the correct type of coolant fluid and adequate amounts when you take your vehicle in for routine service. If you don't have the right kind of coolant fluid, you can also schedule an appointment for a system flush to help your car run more efficiently.

Water Pump

The water pump is part of the car's cooling system. The water pump provides pressure that helps take coolant fluid out of the engine. By moving fluid away from the engine, the water pump helps control the engine's core temperature. If coolant fluid sits for too long in the engine, it can get too hot, which in turn causes the engine's temperature to rise above its normal levels. Other parts of the water pump can break and cause it to stop working, too, such as the water pump belt.

Broken Or Leaking Hoses

There are many different hoses in the car's cooling system that connect to various parts. The hoses can cause coolant fluid leaks if they become disconnected from the parts they are attached to or develop cracks or holes, common in older hoses. You may be able to tell if your engine's hoses are leaking if you see blue or green-colored liquid under your car or if you notice a sugary, sweet smell while driving.

Broken Radiator

Problems with your car's radiator, such as clogs and leaks, can interfere with its ability to draw heat away from the engine. In turn, that causes the engine to get too hot. The radiator's fans can also break and cause the engine to get too hot.
